The agreement was reached in talks yesterday between Mr Abhisit and his Burmese counterpart, Thein Sein, in Naypyidaw during Mr Abhisit's one-day visit.

Thai News Agency quoted the prime minister as saying Thailand planned to upgrade the Singkhon checkpoint in Prachuap Khiri Khan's Muang district to serve the new economic centre in southern Burma.

Mr Abhisit also met State Peace and Development Council chairman Than Shwe during the visit, his first to Burma since being appointed prime minister in December 2008.

Acting government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said in Bangkok Thailand also planned to develop a route linking Kanchanaburi with Dawei, formerly known as Tavoy, as a western gateway to markets in Thailand.

Mr Abhisit also raised the need for cooperation from Burma to verify workers' nationalities and register them in a bid to stop illegal workers entering Thailand. Only 150,000 Burmese workers have registered, but the government wants to register about 800,000 labourers from Burma.

Mr Panitan said the prime minister planned to offer Thailand's help with Burma's elections on Nov 7.
